NFPA 701 is the Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films. The standard is divided into Method 1 and Method 2 according to fabric weight. This Flame Propagation Tester is manufactured in accordance with NFPA 701 Method 2 and is suitable for testing single or multi-layer fabric panels heavier than 700 g/m² (21 oz/yd²), as well as polyethylene-coated fabrics and similar materials.

Applies to materials with a density less than or equal to 700 g/m². Typical items include draperies, curtains, and other fabrics used as window treatments, usually as single-layer fabrics. The exception is when more than one layer is fastened together by sewing or other mechanical means.
Applies to plastic films, vinyl-coated fabrics such as blackout linings, and lined curtains with a vinyl coating. Decorative materials other than fabrics fall within this category. Fabrics with or without reinforcement or a backing used as interior building decoration must also pass Test 2, including permanent enclosures for buildings under construction. Awnings, plastic tarps, tents, banners, and membrane structures must meet Test 2 requirements as well. These items cannot be tested to Test 1 — only Test 2.
If you are unsure which method applies to your material, please contact the NFPA or visit their website for the complete and detailed certification requirements.
