NFPA 701 is the Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films. Based on fabric weight, the standard is divided into Method 1 and Method 2.
This Flame Propagation Tester is manufactured in accordance with NFPA 701 Method 2 as specified by the US Fire Department. It is suitable for testing single or multiple layers of fabric panels weighing more than 700 g/m² (21 oz/yd²), as well as polyethylene-coated fabrics and similar materials.
NFPA 701: 2004 and 2010 Editions, Test Method 2
Applies to materials with a density less than or equal to 700 g/m². Items in this category include draperies, curtains, and other fabrics used as window treatments. These are typically single-layer fabrics. The exception is when more than one layer is fastened together by sewing or other mechanical means.
Applies to plastic films, vinyl-coated fabrics such as blackout linings, and lined curtains with a vinyl coating. Decorative materials other than fabrics also fall within this category. Fabrics with or without reinforcement or a backing used as interior building decoration must also pass Test 2. This includes permanent enclosures for buildings under construction. Awnings, plastic tarps, tents, banners, and membrane structures must meet Test 2 requirements. These items cannot be tested to Test 1 — only Test 2.
If you are unsure which test method applies to your material, please contact the NFPA or visit their website for detailed guidance. The purpose of this information is to provide insight into the fire certifications that apply to the flame retardancy of plastic sheeting and related materials.
