New Study Reveals Surprising Relationship Between Mattress Firmness and Comfort

A new study from sleep science company SKYKINE found that medium-firm mattresses provide the best combination of comfort and support for most sleepers. The study analyzed data from over 10,000 mattress owners and their preferences for firmness and comfort.

SKYKINE, which develops innovative sleep monitoring devices and applications, conducted an in-depth analysis of how mattress firmness impacts sleep quality and comfort. The results showed that medium-firm mattresses were rated as the most comfortable by the largest percentage of sleepers. Mattresses that were very soft or very firm received lower comfort ratings, suggesting that medium-firm is the “sweet spot” for most people.

“We were surprised to see such a clear trend in the data showing medium-firm mattresses as the optimal choice for comfort and support,” said Jerry, CEO of SKYKINE. “While mattress firmness is often thought of as a matter of personal preference, our research indicates that medium-firm mattresses are likely to satisfy the largest number of sleepers.”

The study also found relationships between mattress firmness, sleep position, and body type. For example, side sleepers and those with lower body weights tended to prefer softer mattresses, while back sleepers and heavier people rated firmer mattresses as more comfortable. However, medium-firm mattresses still received high marks across all groups.
